It’s been awhile since our last strip. We’re probably reaching the halfway mark for the first “episode” and there’s still plenty of new characters and locations to appear. This will be slowing down the rate at which we’re able to publish so we’re going to get rid of our Tuesday weekly schedule which we haven’t followed since November.
In my first blog entry I mentioned I used to make comics with my cousin Joel back in High School. Well Joel just launched a webcomic of his own in the last few weeks. It’s going to be an anthology series that takes place in Popular City. The first story is already up and the second story is a few pages in so check it out at http://www.strippedcomics.com. For helping him out with setting up WordPress and Comicpress he made me this image of Very Prone To Injury Man, the titular character of our series that never went anywhere:
We’re extending our break by one more week! Julie got a new iMac and now that she’s all set up she’s finally getting it all the graphics done. The good news is her new computer is super fast and she’s able to produce at a considerable faster speed. Have a good week!
Today’s strip ends the Beach Party Prelude to Saved By The Spell. We’re going to take a small break of a week or two from posting to work on getting images we need for the site made. When we return we’ll be starting on the first day of school at Harry Houdini Memorial High.
I finally saw Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 last Tuesday evening with my old roommate Ali. I was really happy with it for the most part. I would have loved to seem the scene with Harry and his family, and hope they are somehow incorporating it into the second half of the book or in the very least it makes the deleted scenes. I found the chase scene before they are captured near the end of the movie jarring. It’s one of my biggest qualms with action scenes in the last few years, they don’t really show what’s happening in any kind of sensible fashion, rather they elude to action happening with quick cuts. It’s lazy film making and I hope the trend goes away soon. Imagine how awful the speeder bike chase in Return of the Jedi would have looked if they used there techniques?
I’ve also been watching a lot of Avatar: The Last Airbender lately. This show is amazing and I wish I had gotten into it sooner. The story is fantastic, and easily one of the best I’ve ever seen in a cartoon series. Some of the one liners are fantasticly funny.
If anyone is looking for cheap Christmas presents, check out Rancid Yogurt. Sherry’s pins are adorable and she has an awesome sale going on. I picked up an amazing Black Cat painting that she had done, I’m in love with her style, and you should be too.
The third strip is now up. This offering is also available, slightly modified, as a wallpaper in our gallery. It’s been hard not posting this sooner and keeping to the Tuesday schedule. I’ve also decided to enable comments on new strips and posts. They will be moderated before they get posted in an attempt to avoid inappropriate spammers.
Over the next few weeks I’m going to be heavily modifying the design of the website. We’re currently working on trying to figure out a new logo that isn’t a direct parody of the Saved By The Bell logo. I’d like to thank the good folks at The Webcomics Study Group for helping point me in the right direction in the design and layout of the site. I’ve only been in the group for less than a week but I can already see how much of a support group they will be. That being said, if something doesn’t seem to be working properly, please let me know here.
Friday I will be attempting to get movie passes to see Scott Pilgrim Vs The World. Edgar Wright, Bryan Lee O’Malley and Ellen Wong (Knives Chau) will be in attendance for a QA at the Bloor Cinema here in Toronto. If all goes well it will be amazing. Also speaking of epic movies, only 17 days until the new Harry Potter Movie! I wish I never lost my awesome Slytherin scarf.
A lot of people had seen kind of the rough version of the previous strip at our original domain savedbythespellcomic.com (which just stopped working recently) since I had been using it to work on the layout of the site. So in a way this is the first new Saved By The Spell Strip in over a year, which is really exciting for me. I have the next four strips sitting in my inbox and it’s really tempting to just post them all at once.
Ontario had their municipal elections on Monday, and I am so disappointed in the Toronto results. Over 50% of the voters voted for an evil evil man to become our mayor. Rob Ford is a homophobic, xenophobic, racist and classist prick who hates cyclists and public transit. I’m so disappointed.. I had moved here from Ottawa in December and was utterly frustrated by the moron they had elected the previous election. I thought Toronto was supposed to be a more progressive city. Shame Toronto, shame!
If anyone is on facebook our fan page is pretty new and can be found here.
